Luigi’s Mansion
I realize that this is a wide departure from my usual posts, but since I am currently in the process of getting back into writing on a regular basis, I figured it would be kind of nice to share the last writing assignment of the school year. The last composition assignment asked the student to write and present an advertisement. My youngest, who is 12, wrote the following advertisement as her assignment. I think she did a fantastic job, so I thought I would share it with all of you. The only assistance I gave, was to align the photos (although she probably could have done it better and faster).
Imagine that you won a mansion in a contest that you didn’t even enter, there is even a map to the mansion and it looks like a good place to live, so you call your brother/sister to tell him/her about the good news and tell him/her to meet you at the mansion to celebrate.
But you get lost in the creepy forest that surrounds your mansion,
but eventually you see, from what the map says, your new mansion but it looked better on the map and your brother/sister should’ve arrived first but he/she is nowhere to be seen. So you go into the creepy mansion only to discover it’s filled with ghosts! To make things worse the ghost you see looks like it’s going to attack! Lucky for you some guy shows up with a vacuum cleaner and tries to catch the ghost that was going to attack you but the ghost escapes. So you go over to the guy with the vacuum cleaner and he says his name is Professor E. Gadd, but before he can say more three ghosts appear! But you and the professor are able to escape and he says that he saw your brother/sister enter the mansion but he hasn’t seen him since.
If you think that’s interesting then Luigi's Mansion
will be one of the most entertaining games you will ever play! "Luigi's Mansion was relatively well-received by reviewers, despite being criticized for its short length. The game has sold over 2.5 million copies, and is the fifth best-selling Nintendo GameCube game in the United States. It was also one of the first games to be re-released as a Player's Choice title on the system."[2] This game is filled with puzzles so it requires a lot of thinking and patience to beat, so you can’t afford to overlook anything because the thing you overlook might just be the door, key or contain/be the item you need to move on. This game will keep you entertained for years and it is rated E for everyone, so even if you’re four you can play this game!
Early in the game you will receive two items, one of the items is the one you need to defeat the ghosts.
After a brief explanation on how to use the main item and a quick practice course you can either go to the gallery (which won’t serve any purpose until you beat the first boss), the mansion, or take the practice course again, your choice. You should be prepared for surprises, because almost all of the ghosts pop up suddenly and out of nowhere. Also all of the rooms are dark until all of the ghosts in the room are defeated. There are over thirty-five indoor rooms that you can explore and there are at least five outdoor rooms that you can explore, and it is best if you explore every corner of the rooms, just so you don’t miss anything.
So if you want to have a great time buy Luigi’s Mansion today!

When Brains Go Numb
When I first started writing a blog, I figured it would be a piece of cake. Just write a few lines and that would be it. Well, that is the farthest thing from the truth. Blogs require a great deal of thought and dedication. I want mine to be the best, so I strive to write articles with good content. I want to write articles about everyday life and how it affects us. However, there are those days, like today, when ideas just seem to flee. So, I revert to my old stand-by: BS. Well, I do have a college degree: its a BA, not a BS, but I figure it's close enough. Sometime ago, we installed a squirrel feeder in our backyard. I was somewhat reluctant do do this because I didn't think it would ever be used. Less than a week after I put it up, there were squirrels there. My question: how did they know it was there? Is there some type of squirrel Brian Williams that announces new feeder locations? Do they have a type of "eye in the sky" Feeder Report? This, to me, is a mystery.
Ever go into the kitchen and take-out the can opener only to discover that your cat, who was sleeping on the other side of the house, appears by your legs? What? Do they have the hearing of bats? Do they have a sort of cat sonar that picks-up "can-opener waves?"
You are alone in the house and it's late at night. Your cute little bundle of fur wakes from a sound sleep, goes to the doorway of a dark room and hisses. Do they actually see something? Do they sense something we can't? Or, is it some kind of private "cat joke," an initiation they must perform in order to become a full member of the cat gang.
We interrupt this program to bring you an important announcement: If you are here looking for the Canucklehead Scavenger Hunt, you are one step closer.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled program...
You know, I love the sound of the lawn mower, especially when someone else is mowing our lawn.
I am going to share my tax return with two of my friends: MasterCard and Visa, aren't I nice?
You have bags of leftover Halloween candy in the house. It's December and you never ate it, so you take it to work and give it to your friends. That night, you end up going to the store to buy more candy.
You wash your car and the next day....it doesn't rain. YES!! You feel like you are on the top of the world. You go to the store to buy a big steak to celebrate. When you come back to your car, you notice a huge pterodactyl has pooped right on the hood.
Well, I've been putting it off long enough, the lawn needs to be mowed. I guess I should go out there and watch my wife mow it. After all, I try to be a good husband.

I want to take a moment to pause and give a heart-felt Thank You to all those men and women who gave their lives in the defense of our country. So, please take a moment to raise your glass to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, because without their bravery, all this would not be possible.

Caesar Potato Salad with Sugar Snap Peas
Here is a recipe I found in the current copy of Bon Appétite Magazine. I just wanted to let you all know, that I tried this recipe tonight (may 20) and it is fantastic! The contrasting flavors just bring this salad to life. It also looks a lot less complicated than my Tangy Potato Salad, that I shared with you yesterday. * Note: Although in this recipe, it tells you to steam the potatoes, I still plan to boil them (I do not have a steamer or strainer large enough). At the end of this page, I have included a link back to the original recipe, so please stop by and view this and other mouth-watering recipes.
What You Need
* 1 1/2 pounds unpeeled assorted fingerling potatoes or baby potatoes (such as white-skinned, red-skinned, and purple), cut crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick slices
* 8 oz trimmed sugar snap peas
* 1 bunch radishes, trimmed, sliced
* 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
* 1/4 cup olive oil
* 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
* 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
* 1 garlic clove, pressed (if you do not have a Garlic Press
* 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Putting it Together
- Steam potatoes on steamer rack set in large pot over boiling water until almost tender, about 10 minutes.
- Add sugar snap peas and steam until peas are crisp-tender and potatoes are just tender, about 1 minute longer.
- Transfer vegetables to large bowl. Cool slightly. Add radishes and onion.
- Whisk next 4 ingredients in small bowl to blend.
- Whisk in Parmesan.
- Season dressing with salt and generous amount of pepper.
- Add dressing to potato mixture; toss to coat.
- Season with more salt and pepper, if desired.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Recipe courtesy of...Bon Apétite Magazine
*If you do not have a garlic press, no problem. Here are the directions for mincing garlic...
How to Mince Garlic
- Take garlic clove and place on cutting board
- Place the flat part of the blade on the garlic bulb and, using the palm of your hand, press down until you just hear it crush
- Remove the skin and replace the garlic on the cutting board
- Again, crush the garlic and while maintaining the downward pressure, move the back of the knife toward you, until it is free of the garlic
- With the cutting-edge of the knife on the garlic, place the palm of one hand towards the top of the knife and your other hand on the handle. (the hand near the top of the knife will act as a pivot point for your chopping)
- Using a rocking motion, chop the garlic, moving the knife back and forth as you go
- Once you have gone through the garlic a few times, repeat the crushing technique as described in step 4
- Repeat steps 6 and 7 until you have the garlic finely minced

Choosing a Credit Card
In this era of the Great Recession (yes, Business Week refers to it as such), there are many of us struggling to repay our existing credit card debt. While this may be the norm for many of us, I understand that there are others out there that are willing to take the “credit plunge” and apply for their own card. As with anything, there are many out there from which to choose; just be sure to choose wisely, because a misinformed or hasty decision could cost you dearly.
Now, in a perfect world, we would use the card for purchases and then pay off the balance at the end of each month. This is the best way for all of us to use these cards, because you get the convenience of being able to make purchases without cash, yet you do not have to pay interest to the credit card company. However, this is not a perfect world and most of us end up using the cards and only paying the minimum balance due. This is exactly what the companies’ want, because this is how they make their money. The first thing you should look for in a credit card is the APR or Annual Percentage Rate. This is the rate that the company will charge you for the use of their money. Obviously, you want to find a card with the lowest rate, somewhere below 15% would be reasonable. The better your credit score, the lower the rate you will be offered. You should also be aware that many companies will offer an introductory rate, which can last anywhere from six months to a year. After this rate expires, you will then be bumped-up to the regular rate. With regards to the APR, you must also read the fine print and discover what the penalties are for Late Payments. If a payment is late, the company may have the option of cancelling the introductory rate and raising the standard rate to as much as 24%, if not higher.
The next item to consider is whether or not you want to pay the company even more for the privilege of using their card, which comes in the form of an annual fee. Since I feel that I am already paying them enough through their interest rate, I would suggest you try and find a credit card with no annual fee. If you have a decent credit score, you should not have a problem finding such a card. If your current credit card company charges you an annual fee, I would suggest negotiating with them to drop the fee. If they don’t, drop them and find another company (If you have a long-standing relationship with the company, this may hurt your credit score).
If you are looking to consolidate your debt from many high-interest rate cards to one lower-rate card, than you will want to find a company that offers 0% balance transfers. Finding such a card can literally save you hundreds of dollars in fees. Just be sure that you will be able to make the monthly payments on your new card, because even one late payment can see your wonderfully-low rate skyrocket to over 21% (or more). If you are looking into debt consolidation and you are a homeowner, another option to consider is a home equity loan. Because these are secured loans, they are often offered at lower rates; however, these loans are secured with your house, so be very careful when considering them.
As you decide on your new card company, please be sure and read the fine print in the contracts. Yes, it is tedious, but it can save you much heartache later. I have tried to cover a few of the points you should look at when choosing a credit card company. If you come across something that you need assistance with or clarification on, please let me know and I will try my best to help you. One final thing to remember: although credit can be your best friend, if not treated properly and with respect, it can turn into your worst enemy.

Finding the Right Web Host
As you may remember, I am in the process of moving-on from my time at Blogger. When I first began my blogging experience, I knew nothing about what it takes to write and produce a blog. The actual writing of the blog was not really a stumbling block for me; it was having to do everything else that caused me the problems. I had to discover how to attract people to my site and actually read what I had published. I also needed to teach myself HTML and CSS, so I could modify the templates that I was using. Throughout this time, I did not have to worry about having to pay a monthly fee to have my site hosted, so I was able to learn at my own pace. However, now that I know just enough to get myself into trouble, I feel that I have outgrown Blogger and I am now ready to strike-out on my own.
One of the first things that you will notice when you begin hunting for a host, is the vast number of web hosting companies there are out there. When I first began searching, I let my wallet do the walking and searched through a number of free hosting sites. Yes, they are out there, but if you want to be in total control of your site, you may not want to go with those companies. What you want to look for is a hosting company that is both reliable and inexpensive. Although this may seem like an impossible combination to find, with the right tools, it is possible.
Although you can run around and go from one hosting site to another and take your own notes, you may want to go to one place and have all the footwork done for you. The site that I found had their reviews nicely arranged on an awards page. On this page you will find the results of independent consumer reviews on separate hosting companies. The companies that have received the highest number of votes in their category are listed and available for your inspection. For example, if you were looking for the best blog host, you would click on the name of the company and be taken to a very detailed description page. They have categories for best budget hosting, e-commerce hosting, PHP web hosting, and forum hosting, to name just a few. I have to admit that there are several companies that I have never heard of, but I now have their information in my arsenal and can use it to make an informed decision.
Once you have a short-list of the companies that you are interested in, you can now go and conduct your in-depth research on those hosting sites. You will want to try and find independent reviews and opinions with regards to those companies. Talk to your friends and fellow bloggers and find out who they use and why. Once you are comfortable and are willing to take the final plunge, be sure you know how to change web hosts, so you limit the downtime of your site. From copying your files to making sure all your internal links work properly, there will be a lot of work for you to do to ensure a smooth transition.
Although the choice can be daunting, I hope that the resources included in this article will help you along the way to making an informed decision. Just be sure to do your research and listen to those that are already out there and using these services. While I can only provide you the necessary information, your fellow friends and bloggers can give you their opinions based on first-hand experience. Try and use both when making your final decision and good luck with your choice.

Which ISP Do You Use
We are in the process of trying to dump our home phone and go with cellular service. However, if I discontinue our home service our ISP, which is currently through our phone company, will raise the ISP rate from $24.00 to $44.00. This basically negates any savings we would have enjoyed.Question: Can anyone recommend an ISP that is fast, dependable, and costs less than $40.00?
Sorry that this is so short, but I have just finished getting the history papers submitted and I now need to help them prepare for their oral reports...does it ever end? Anyway, only a few more weeks.

Still Plugging Along
If we can scrape together the funds, I am planning on re-landscaping the berm in our backyard. It is something that I have been wanting to do for several years, but I have never gotten around to actually doing it (My initial focus and efforts have been on getting the front yard completed). The berm is approximately 80 feet long and I plan to tier it, so we can plant trees and possibly move our garden there. If I do actually tackle this project, I will be sure to get some before, during, and after shots to show you (this would also motivate me to do a half-way decent job).
I know it may come as a shock to most of you, but I have been trying to make some money with this site. This being said, you may have noticed some strange titles appearing in my feeds. Well, just to let you know, I have been posting some affiliate-related posts to try and take advantage of the search engine traffic I am receiving. So as not to interfere with my regular, thought-inspiring articles, I pre-date them, but they still seem to be appearing on my updates.
Anyway, I think I have jumped around enough in this post, so I guess I'll start proofing the final draft of the history paper that has just been sent to me.

The Remote is in Control
I have to say that when we watch TV, even if it’s a program I particularly don’t like, I HAVE to have possession of the remote. I must be able to control the volume at all times. When a commercial comes on, I like to surf the stations (cowabunga, dude). I sit there with the remote glued to my hand and if I leave the room, it comes with me. It’s like it becomes a natural extension of my body.
If there’s something on I don’t like, Bam! It goes away. The volume too low, Bam! (is Emeril around here?) It becomes louder. The power, the control, the heady feeling of omnipotence. All who watch with me must kneel to the power I possess. Now, if I can only get my wife to mow the lawn, I’ll be all set.

I Want a Personal Trainer
Since I am short on time and hair (yes, still pulling-out my hair over the end of school), here is an article originally published last May. Hope you enjoy it.I’m just sitting here trying to come up with a good excuse to not exercise. I keep telling myself that my muscles need to recover from yesterday. They really do. Then I tell myself that if I do exercise, I’ll feel better for the rest of the day. What should I do?
Actually what I am trying to do is "guilt" myself into doing something that I really don’t feel like doing. I go through this everyday and I must say I am getting tired of it. From day to day, the excuses become lamer and lamer. What I really need is some huge Terminator-type personal trainer to get me motivated. It would be a combination of fear and envy. Fear, that he would actually follow through with his threats and envy, that I really would like to look like him.
The only problem is, I don’t have the $300 an hour I would need to hire Arnold. That’s where I kind of envy these Hollywood types. Why? Because they have the money to hire these people who not only motivate them, but show them the right exercises to do. Me, I have the pamphlet that came with my Total Gym and my own ability to guilt myself into doing it.

Battlestar Galactica Releases to Blue-ray
Yes, you heard me correctly, on July 28, 2009 the Entire Battlestar Galactica Series, is being released on Blue-ray. Now, I realize that the latest Harry Potter is due to be released this Summer as well, but this is the release that I am looking forward to. For those of us who followed the series, it was sad to see it finally come to an end. But now, there is a way we can continue to get our B.G. fix. No longer do we have to try and find something to fill that special hour on Friday night.
Whether you enjoy watching it one episode a night or decide to invite your friends over for a marathon, you now have the opportunity to make Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
To order, just click on the text link or go through the image below and you will be taken directly to Amazon.com. I am looking forward to being able to re-live the series once again. Time for me to get ready for my marathon.
