Tom's Revenge, Losing that Holiday Weight

photo of Koko climbing a ladderAs you know the holidays are over and the turkey and all his friends have come home to roost...in our hips. Yes, it's Tom's (the turkey) final revenge and now something needs to be done about it. As our minds all turn towards losing the weight we have gained over the past few months, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, we must understand that we didn't put this weight on overnight, so we can't lose it overnight. What am I saying is: stay away from those lose-10-pounds-in-two-weeks pills. If you see one of those advertisements, just put the mouse down and move slowly away from the computer. The only thing you will lose from using those pills will be water and your hard-earned cash. Yup, you may lose weight, but it will only be water-weight, and you can lose that on your own.

You may also want to be think carefully about those terrific one-year membership offers by gyms. Yes, they are great values, but unless you are totally committed to working-out on a long-term basis for an entire year, you may end up losing money in the long run. If you want and can afford to go to a gym, PLEASE GO; However, if you are unsure whether or not you you will stick with it, then I would try and get a monthly rate to start, just in case you do happen to lose interest.

If I could afford it, I would be in a gym everyday. They have the equipment and the staff to help you lose the weight and tone and build your muscles in a safe and balanced way. As it is, I am on my own and must learn the hard way (violins playing in the background). All I am saying is, please be careful, the weight-loss vultures are out in force this time of year and are waiting to descend upon you. Don't give them that chance.

  1. I'm envious of Koko, I admit it. Why don't my beans have a ladder up so I can play on it?

Mom's been feeling bad about discouraging Dad from getting a treadmill. Maybe in the future ...

  2. Lux: That was taken when we were putting up our decorations. He can get up just fine, but needs help getting down.
I understand, those things, for a quality treadmill, can be very expensive ($1,000 and up). Would your husband want a slightly used Nordic Track? (lol) That would give me the excuse I need not to use it:)

  3. The good thing about signing up for a year is that it helped motivate me to go more often than I would have otherwise. Now I am switching over to a month-by-month membership at Fitness 19.

  4. Great advice. I am getting back onto the workouts myself and it's as you mentioned...I'm doing it the old-fashioned way...sweating it off with exercise :-) No pills here ;-) Happy Tuesday to you!

  5. Love that picture, too funny.

Yes,I agree. We all make sometimes too spontaneous plans for losing the weight. The more thought out, the more likely to stick with it.

  6. Karen, author of "My Funny Dad, Harry": That is great news, I'm glad that you were able to still have that motivate you; it shows a lot of inner strength. There are those who there who would just think "out of sight, out of mind" (with regards to the money) and just move on. How often to you go to the gym? We have one just down the street from us, but I just cannot afford to go.

Dori: Thank you and good luck with that. It certainly isn't fun, but it feels good when your done. Happy Tuesday to you, too;)

Pippin Party: It is easy to get caught up in the moment and try anything that will allow us to lose the weight quickly. Unfortunately, it is slow and steady wins the race. I just wish it was as much fun losing the weight as it was putting it on;-)

  7. I love your cat and I love seeing your cat in your photos. You're right about the weight loss pills and also the gym membership. Don't join a gym unless you plan on exercising at it. LOL

  8. Jolie: Thanks, he just loves getting in the way. I joined a gym years ago and signed a one-year membership: I went faithfully for the first few weeks and then eventually stopped going. A very expensive lesson learned. Although now, I would love to join a gym, as I exercise everyday, anyway.

  9. Mom was pretty good about working out during the holidays (of course, she manages a health club so she should!!) Of course, she ate more than she worked off, so she's trying to lose her extra pounds too.

  10. Great advice (and cute picture of Koko)! We joined a gym and went every weekday faithfully for a year. Lost a lot of weight and gained a lot of muscle but the boredom was overwhelming and so was the trying to get an elliptical or weight machine because there was more people than machines. So we quit and now are in the position of having to start all over again on the weight loss journey.

  11. Furkidsmom: That's a great perk for your job! Do you get a lot of new customers this time of year?

BeadedTail: I was wondering if that would be a problem; trying to actually find a machine that is not being used. Good luck in starting over, I know that it won't be easy. Is there a particular machine you liked, maybe you could get one of those for your home? (I know, easier said than done).

  12. Your advice was great. Too often we spend money for an entire year's membership and then we end up not going. There are many gyms that do sell monthly or weekly passes and that's a great way to get started. And, yes, great advice to watch out for all the diet stuff being sold.
