The Rose Manor Motel

Most summers when my sister and I were growing up, our family would take a trip to Portland, Oregon and spend four days traveling around the area. On the first night, we would go to a small diner in Oregon City and have the best fish and chips. The next day, we would go to Mount Hood and spend a few hours walking around at Timberline Lodge. I was actually lucky enough to have my picture taken with the Lassie and the ranger from the TV show (Yes, this was back in the late 60's and early 70's).

All this was said, because during my travels on the Internet, I came across a picture of the motel we always stayed at. I remember that we would leave at 3:30AM and even though my dad drove tweleve hours to get to Portland from Stockton, Califorina (this was before I-5 was completed), he would always take us swimming in the pool when we got there. I have to say that was one of the high points of the trip.

I proudly present to you, in all its 1969 glory: The Rose Manor Motel...

Sadly, now all that stands there is the sign and a vacant lot. Well, I guess that's what memories (and postcards from Ebay) are for...

  1. That sounds like a wonderful family vacation. How great that your dad would take you swimming after such a long drive. Too bad it's not there any more. At least you have the memories.

  2. Ann: Yes, they were terrific vacations. I took it for granted at the time, but looking back, he really sacrificed a lot for us kids.
I guess they're going to be putting up a 24-hour fitness gym there...so much for progress :(

  3. Sounds like you have fun memories of childhood vacations! I remember those days of driving all over and looking forward to motels with pools instead of today's wi-fi. Pretty cool you met Lassie too!

  4. That's what I want for my kids; grand memories of vacations, time spent with family, nostalgia for hotels that might not last to their adulthood. Thanks for sharing.

  5. BeadedTail: Yes, those were fantastic memories! It's strange that I can even still smell the sawmill in Oregon City where we would have our fish and chips. I'll see if my parents can find the picture of Lassie and me and I'll post it.

Kristen: That's what my dream was for our kids, too. Try not to let an opportunity go by to make those memories, because these kids grow up way too fast. Thanks for visiting :)

  6. You met Lassie? How cool! What a shame they tore it down. But I suppose it may not of been in the best of shape after all these years...your memories will keep it alive.

  7. Cinnamon-Girl: Yes, it was so cool. You remember that rock he would always jump onto at the start of each show? That's where I had my picture taken with him. Once my parents can find the picture, I'll be sure to post it.
