Cascadian Farm "Live Green Together" Giveaway

The simple act of unplugging electronics when you aren’t using them not only reduces energy, but could save you as much as 10 percent on your electric bill. You may be asking why this can save energy? Even though your toaster, microwave, coffeemaker, and television are turned off, they still draw a small amount of electricity in order to maintain their internal memories, this is called a Phantom Load.
It is not a very large energy draw, but if you multiply that by every unused appliance in your house over a period of twenty-four hours, it adds up. Now, I understand that many of us, myself included, would prefer not to sit around as the TV re-learns all of the channels each time, but take a look around and see if there are any other things you can unplug: what about that toaster sitting on your counter or that paper shredder in your bedroom? I'm looking in my kitchen and I see a toaster oven, toaster, and an old coffee maker that are not being used, yet are still plugged in. I know that this may not seem like you are doing a lot, but every bit helps and any savings on an electric bill is welcome.

All this is said to let you know that April 22nd is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and Cascadian Farm wants you to join the celebration by pledging to follow a few eco-friendly tips on Facebook. There are eight different pledges to choose from, so it will be easy to find one that fits your lifestyle. Just go to CF Earth Day on Facebook and click the "go to application" button, which will take you to the pledge page. Now, when you get to the page, just let the different types of pledges cycle through and then click on the one you would like to do. The pledge I took was to be a food planner. It was mentioned that in the United States, 25% of prepared food is thrown away. I have to admit that I am guilty of doing this very thing, so I'll try to come up with some creative ways of using leftover food and do my part to reduce the waste (I think I smell some future articles). For each person that signs a pledge now through May 31, 2010, Cascadian Farm will donate $1, up to $40,000, to the Organic Farming Research Foundation, which fosters the improvement and widespread adoption of organic farming systems.

Oh, you might also be interested in knowing that if you go to Cascadian Farm.com, you can download a $1.00 coupon.

Now, for the moment you have all been waiting for: Cascadian Farm is giving away a "Live Green Together" prize pack (pictured above), which includes Cascadian Farm cereals and granola bars, including: Fruitful O´s cereal, Cinnamon Crunch cereal, Chocolate Chip Chewy granola bars, Dark Chocolate Almond Granola, Dark Chocolate Almond granola bars, Oats & Honey granola, and an eco-friendly grocery bag. 1. Thanks for sharing the information. Tim, I missed your comment on my food blog in time to visit your recommendation - so, I'll file it for my next trip to AZ.

  2. Boise Diva: I figured that would be the case, but I wanted to pass that info along, just in case. It sounded like a cool place (pun intended) to visit.

  3. Yeah, I drive my DH crazy with my unplugging everything - I put the gaming and TV on a strip to make it super easy. OK and lazy ;)

  4. Storm, The Psychotic Housewife: From what I've read, that's actually the preferred method of doing it (power strip).
I was wondering, does you or your DH play Left for Dead II? I've heard a lot about it and was wondering what you thought.

  5. I'm sure that there are plenty of things that could be unplugged around here. Good idea on the food thing. There are really a lot of creative things you can do with leftovers. I don't have a problem eating them but my husband is not a big fan, makes it rather difficult some times

  8. Lynne: We do too, it's the best! Great, now I want one :)

Ann: Same here on the plug issue. As for the leftovers, I may start keeping track of what I do, so I can post about it.

Cheryl F. {The Lucky Ladybug}: Thank you very much! We're in the process of replacing our old light bulbs with the CFL's. It's going to take a while because of the expense, but they do save money in the long run.
Each one of your entries has been noted and thanks again for stopping by :)
