Tips on Choosing Digital Cameras

If you are like most people, the thought of purchasing an electronic device can send shivers down your spine. Not only can the price be intimidating, but the terminology can be downright mysterious. The way most people get around this obstacle, is to just purchase the digital camera, TV, or DVD that is currently on sale, and leave it at that. If you are deciding to purchase a television, Smartphone, Game Console, or MP3 Player, you might want to try looking through a buying guide. This will help you sort out all the terminology and assist you in getting a better handle on the various options and accessories that are available for the product of you choice. If you are willing to take the time and effort to do a little research, you will find yourself not only understanding the device you wish to own, but you will also save money by buying the best device for you, not the electronics store.

For example, if you are in the market for a digital camera, there are a variety of factors to take into consideration when purchasing one; with one of the most talked-about factors being pixels. Just how many mega pixels (MPs) do you need in a camera? Well, if you are shopping for a digital camera, than the first thing you need to ask yourself is, "what are you going to use it for?" If you are a beginner or, if you just want to take pictures to share with your friends online, than you would probably be happy with a 2-3MP camera. This will print 5 x 7 inch pictures and allow you to email them to your friends with a file size of just 980 k. You get good quality pictures, but at an affordable price. If you are a photographer who enjoys editing the pictures you take, than you will want a camera that falls into the 4-6MP area. Any more than that and you fall into the professional category and you will be looking at the 7MP+ range.

One thing to keep in mind is, that the more MPs you have, the more memory needed to store the photo. For example, if you have a 64 MB memory card (I wouldn’t go any lower), you will be able to store only about 74 pictures, 2MP pictures; for a 5 MP you will be able to only store about 25. So, something that you need to decide, along with the MP size of your digital camera, is the size of the memory card you wish to purchase. Once you know what you want to use the camera for, you will be able to adjust the number of MPs and the size of the memory card(s) to your particular needs. Remember, the more MPs your camera has, the more expensive it will be: by hundreds of dollars. You want to buy the camera that best meets YOUR needs, NOT the needs of the commissioned salesperson.

I realize that there are many other features, which you need to consider when purchasing a digital camera, but I wanted to take this time to tackle the one that has the most dramatic impact on the price. Once you have decided on the other features you desire, be sure to write them down, so you can compare the various brands and find the one that is best for you. The next big chore is finding the best value for your dollar, and that is where SHOP.COM comes into play. They will display the different models and very detailed, technical, descriptions so you will know exactly what you are getting. In addition to the technical side, they also display the best values offered at a variety of stores and online sites. So, once you find the best price, just click the link and you can complete your purchase.

From televisions to the hottest electronic toys, SHOP.COM is there to make sure you get the best deal for your dollar. Once you have finished the initial research on your item, why not save yourself some additional time and trouble by heading over and finding the best price for what you want.

Weight Loss Progress Report

I am sorry to say that my last weight loss progress report to all of you was back in July. The reason for this is simple: I hit a mean, nasty, and ornery weight loss plateau, that I just couldn't seem to shake. Finally however, I was able to overcome it and get back on track once again. My goal weight is 190 lbs. so, I seem to be getting nearer yet, somehow it seems farther away than ever. I know you’re busy so, here are the results.

  • Beginning weight on 6 August 2007: 298 pounds (as confirmed by my doctor)

  • Beginning hip measurement:48 inches

  • Beginning waist measurement: 56 inches

    • Weight on 27 July 2008: 232 lbs.

    • Hip measurement: 39 inches

    • Waist measurement: 44 inches

      • Weight on 25 March 2009: 215 lbs.

      • Hip Measurement: 38 inches

      • Waist measurement: 41 3/4 inches

      • Total weight loss: 83 lbs.

I really don't see myself losing any more than maybe one or two more inches around my hips, but I do know that I have at least another five or six inches or more, that I can lose around my waist. As for any fat on my legs, arms, or back, that has been pretty much eliminated and replaced with muscle. Once I ever reach the 200 lb. mark, I am going to break down and reward myself with a Chicago Connection Pizza. After that, it will be back to work.

My Review of H & R Block’s TaxCut

For the past several years, I have been using TurboTax to prepare our taxes, but this year, due to a variety of reasons, I decided to use a different tax preparation software program and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Now, I know that TurboTax has a lot of the same features as TaxCut, which is why this is written for those of us who are looking for an alternative to TurboTax. The following is my impressions on H & R Block's TaxCut 2007 Premium + Federal + State + E-file Edition.

I have just finished installing and using TaxCut and I have to say that I was very pleased with the results. After the initial installation, the program will ask you if you would like to search for updates. I would highly recommend you take the extra time and do this. Depending on your internet connection, it can take anywhere from five to ten minutes (or longer), but it is well worth having an up-to-date tax return. Once the updates have been downloaded and installed, you can then begin preparing your return.

If you are keen to understand the new tax laws and how you might be affected, you will be happy to learn that the Welcome window gives you video tutorial links, so you can learn about the new laws. If you have used TurboTax last year, you have the option of importing the data directly into TaxCut. If information has changed since last year, you can easily edit the entry. If you have never filed before, or this is your first time using tax preparation software, you can always enter the information manually. You may also import data from financial software such as Quicken, Microsoft Money, or any other financial software that supports the Tax Exchange Format [TEF]. Once your initial personal information has been entered, you will be prompted to save the file. Enter the desired name of the file and save; after this initial save, TaxCut will automatically save your entries every few minutes.

If you are a homeowner, you have the option of filling-in your mortgage and tax information yourself, or you can use their Home Mortgage Assistant. This assistant walks you step-by-step through the data entry process. By using the information provided to you by your mortgage company, you can easily answer the questions the Assistant asks. This can be especially helpful if you are a first-time home buyer and are new to this section of the tax form.

As you navigate through the form, you will be constantly kept up-to-date on your estimated refund/amount owed. If you have a question on a particular tax or credit, you simply click the link located next to it and you will be given a detailed explanation. If you are qualified for a particular credit, yet are not given the full amount, TaxCut will display a screen stating the reason(s) you did not qualify for the full credit. Once you have completed the federal portion, TaxCut will perform an error check to make sure that your return is error-free. If any errors are found, it will take you to that section of the return and allow you to make any necessary changes. Once complete, you can then download and complete the State return. All financial information needed from the Federal return on your State return, is automatically entered for you. You then only need to answer the questions specific to your State.

If you elect to e-file your federal return, you will need to know that they require an electronic signature. In order to do this, you will need to have the PIN you used if you e-filed last year or you will need the amount of your gross earnings from your 2007 tax return.

Overall, I would have to say that I was very pleased with this software. I found the pages easy to navigate and the instructions and explanations very straightforward and easy to understand. I also found that the screen and pages were esthetically pleasing, which gives the software a "friendly" feel, which is a big plus when it comes to preparing tax returns. In all, I found TaxCut to be a very user-friendly program and I will gladly use this program next year and recommend it to my friends and family as a great option to TurboTax.

**We had a very basic return, so I was not able to review the other areas that the software covered. However, as just reminded by BeadedTail, not everyone has a very basic return. So, by being lazy and looking through the product description, I found that TaxCut does include Schedule C Support. It also provides extra deduction assistance for those who are self-employed, including home office, rental property and depreciation assistance.

Stainless Steel: Not Just for Kitchens, Anymore

As soon as I make my first million on the Internet, which according to everything I have read, should only take about 30 days or so, my wife and I plan to start construction on our "dream kitchen." We have talked a lot about what we would like to have in our kitchen and it begins with a commercial-grade gas range. We also want a large freezer-on-the-bottom, stainless steel refrigerator, and granite counter tops. As we were cruising the web and searching for other items to populate our kitchen, we discovered that stainless steel is not just for kitchens anymore.

Throughout my research, I have discovered that stainless steel is a very versatile product. It is corrosion resistant, which means that you will not have the rust problems you might get with other metals and, for those of you who are "going green," it is 100% recyclable. I have to admit that one of my main concerns happened to be about potential rust problems. You see, while searching for items for the kitchen, I came across something that really caught my eye, a blomus stainless steel planter. I would have never imagined having a planter made out of stainless steel, but I have to admit that it looks great. I would personally be hesitant to use this outside; however, if you have a covered porch or patio, it would be a perfect addition.

Another item I came across was coat hooks. I know, not very interesting, but it is actually something that we desperately need. You see, we happen to store out artificial Christmas tree in our entry closet. We do this to help cut-down on the dust that accumulates on the tree over the year. Because of this, we have very little room for what the closet was actually built to accommodate: coats. This being the case, I feel that a coat rack is in order. I don’t want to just buy stainless steel coat hooks and screw them into the wall, because that would look tacky. Therefore, I plan to get a nice piece of cherry (use whatever type of wood that goes best with your home) and then, using a decorative bit, router the edges. Once I have treated the wood (I think I may use a clear varnish), I will take my hooks, screw them into the wood, and then mount the wood to the wall.

We have moved from the kitchen, to the patio, to the entryway in pursuit of our House of Steel. The final stop on our journey will be the bathroom. Every bathroom needs to have a towel rod, so why not get one that gives a touch of elegance to your bathroom. To achieve this end, I came across a blomus stainless steel towel rail, which adds that certain touch of style to the room. Since these rods have to handle the weight of your towels and act as the occasional balancing bar, it would be best to install the towel rod in the wall studs. If the rod you choose is too short to allow you to install both ends in the wall studs, try and get at least one end (the end you would most likely grab onto if you needed to balance) installed in the wall stud. To properly complete the installation, you will need to install the other end using a hollow-wall anchor.

I have to admit that I was surprised at the wide variety of stainless steel products that are available. By widening my horizons, I have discovered that stainless steel is not just for the kitchen anymore.

Treadmill or Elliptical, Which to Choose?

In the world of exercise equipment, there is a difficult decision to be made between two different, yet similar pieces of equipment: the treadmill and the elliptical machine. Which one is the right one for you? Well, I hope this article will help you make an informed decision.

When using a treadmill, you will obviously be walking, jogging, or running on it. The activity in which you are engaged, is basically limited to your lower body. Unless you happen to swing your arms as you walk, the upper portion of your body will remain, for the most part, inactive. A treadmill is perfect for the person who loves to walk or jog, yet is unable to do so outside. If you are a runner or jogger, you will find the treadmill a perfect fit for you. If you are interested in purchasing a treadmill, you will want to keep a few things in mind. Firstly, since you will want to maintain your natural stride while exercising, you will need to make sure that the tread belt is a minimum of at least 18 inches wide, with 20 inches being preferable. You will want the length of the tread belt to be a minimum of 50 inches, with 55-60 inches being preferred. Second, make sure you get a motor that will be powerful enough to handle your exercise routine. At a minimum it should be 2.0chp (chp or Continuous Horse Power is the measurement that is consistently delivered during heavy usage over an extended period of time) although 2.5chp and above would be better. If you will be using your treadmill for running, you will want to have a motor of at least 3.0chp. Last, you should check the warranties for the motor and frame. For the motor, a minimum of a ten-year warranty; for the frame and parts, you should look at 3-5 years minimum.

When using an elliptical trainer, you are not only exercising your lower body, but by using the moving handles, you will be exercising your upper body as well. Although, I have not used one, my sister-in-law has one and uses it almost daily. When asked to compare the movement of the elliptical trainer to that of a treadmill, she stated that the elliptical had a motion similar to that of cross-country skiing. Therefore, you will be exercising both your upper and lower body, thus increasing the effectiveness of your cardio workout. In addition, you also have the added benefit of not having to worry about the impact of your strides on your joints. Your feet remain on the pedals of the machine throughout your entire exercise routine, so there is no impact to your joints. You see, on the treadmill, every time you take a step, your foot will impact on the belt and the stress of that impact will be telegraphed to your joints. On an elliptical machine, you do not have that to worry about that. If you happen to have problems with your knees, hips, or other joints, you may want to lean towards purchasing an elliptical trainer.

If you are still unsure of which is right for you, I would suggest going to an exercise equipment store and taking one out for a test drive. While the motion on a treadmill is somewhat straightforward, it may take you time to get used to the motion of the elliptical machine. Whichever you decide, please take the time to research your choices. The Internet is a vast storehouse of information and you can easily find additional articles to help you choose which machine to purchase. For example, just search the phrase treadmill vs elliptical machine and you will get a wealth of information. When you have decided on the machine for you, take a look at the warranties that are offered by the company. The easiest way to discover the durability of the machine is to see how long the company is willing to stand behind it. In short, the longer the warranty, the better and more durable the machine. You may be tempted to spend hundreds less for a lower quality product, but I can tell you from experience, if you buy a machine for $500 and it has a warranty of 90 days, you can be sure that it will break down. I hope that this has helped in some small way. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will do my best to help you.

Fitness Tips: The Exercise Excuse

close-up picture of a cat staring at you
How many times have you been thinking about starting an exercise regime, but have come up with a variety of excuses as to why you shouldn’t. Some of my own favorites are: I’ll wait until I can afford some new workout clothes; I need a treadmill before I can workout; I don’t have an iPod, and my personal favorite……I’ll wait until I lose some weight first.

Now, I personally have used each of these at one time or another and I must say, I can make it sound convincing. After I convince myself that I need to wait, I promptly forget about the excuse I used and continue on the same way. A couple of months later, when I again deign to see myself in the mirror, the cycle starts all over again.

The saying, “Why put off for tomorrow what you can do today,” comes to mind. We can always find a valid excuse for putting something off; however, what we need to do is to find a valid excuse for actually doing it. We need to stop making excuses and start doing something. We don’t need new clothes to sweat in. We don’t need a treadmill when there is a perfectly good sidewalk outside. We don’t need an iPod to keep us company for 20 minutes, try silence and good old fashioned imagination. Once we put the excuses aside, we can begin to put the pounds aside.

Everyday Living

The Economy and My Direct TV

During these economic times, when we are all tightening our belts and pulling-in the reigns of our credit card spending, there are difficult choices that need to be made about our spending habits. Not only are people deciding to hold off on future purchases, but they are also looking into ways of "trimming the fat" in their current lifestyle. I recently wrote an article that discussed our journey down this road and I feel that it is now time for an update.

As with many others throughout the world, we are struggling with finances and as such, have had to make some tough choices. Some of the items we had to look at was our water delivery service, Direct TV, and our phone service. Over three years ago, we decided to rent a water cooler and have water delivered to our house. This was great, because it allowed us to give filtered water to our animals and we also had hot or cold filtered water available all the time. However, it was expensive, averaging $40.00 per month, so we decided to cancel the service and purchased a Brita. The money being saved is currently being redirected to a credit card bill.

As with the phone service, it is also costing us over $44.00 per month and we are currently in the process of canceling it and just using a cell phone. My wife currently has a cell phone, so we decided to pay $10.00 more each month and get one to use around the house. Again, the money saved, just over $30.00, will be redirected to a bill. Now, that just leaves DirectTV to consider. As you may know from reading my profile, I am a stay at home dad and I also home school our kids. In addition to preparing lesson plans and teaching myself the material (so I can present it in such a way as to be understood), I also have general housework to do, and I still need to devote time to writing articles and generally maintaining my site. With this being said, about the only thing I feel like doing at the end of the day, is watching television.

Our family has a few favorite shows such as Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters International, Deadliest Catch, and Top Gear, to name just a few. Luckily, Direct TV Options are many, as they have a wide variety of services from which to choose. These packages range from the lower-priced family-friendly channels to the mega-priced, “I have money to burn and way too much time on my hands” packages. We currently have the Total Choice Plus package, which is a mid-range package, and it includes all the channels we like, plus many others we could care less about. It would be wonderful if they would allow us to customize our own package and adapt it to the lower-priced services, but until I see pigs flying through the air, that probably won’t happen.

I realize that everyone’s lifestyle is different and we each will have different areas in our lives where the fat can be trimmed. It is a difficult choice, because these services have become so ingrained in our lifestyle, that it can feel like parting with an old friend. As we think about where we have been and where we are going, it is imperative to try and make these decisions from a budgeting point of view. Basically, try to look at the bottom line and see what you can cut from your monthly budget, yet still maintain an emotionally healthy lifestyle. As for us, we will revisit our decision regarding Direct TV at the start of each month. For now, we can still afford to keep it but, as with anything else, that too may change. Good luck to you all and remember: you are not alone in this.

Dolphins and Bubbles

I have just finished viewing something that I had never seen before. Just recently, the trainers at Sea World Orlando's Dolphin Cove, discovered a new behavior from the dolphins: they were blowing bubbles under water, the dolphins, not the trainers!

Now, I must say in all honesty that pondering this interesting behavior has not exactly kept me up at night. I mean, I never gave any thought to what dolphins did to amuse themselves. I always assumed that they just swam around, ate little fish and squid, and had more dolphins. So, it kind of caught me by surprise when I saw the Dolphin Bubbles video. While the dolphins are under water, they will blow some air through their blowhole, which produces a stream of water. They then use their heads and spin the bubble into a circle.

I have to admit that I found it fun to watch them play with the bubbles they made. The dolphins would swim around and pass the bubbles to one another and sometimes they would make the bubbles large enough that they could swim through them. I remember when we used to have a dog and I would blow bubbles for her and watch her play with them. She would chase them and try to catch the bubbles in her mouth. It was interesting to see that the dolphins were doing the exact same thing. The trainers at Sea World state that this is a behavior the dolphins teach to each other.

I realize that everyone is busy these days, but if you want something fun and interesting to watch, take a few minutes and watch this video, which was seen on ABC's World News. I just wonder if I will ever hear a news report stating that the dolphins at Sea World have been heard to say, "So long and thanks for all the fish."

Folkart Snowman Purse Gray Pockets Galore

The handles are reinforced for strength. There are several pockets on the inside, even for your pens. A pocket on both sides on the outside. It has a zipper enclosure. It is quilted on my machine and very very beautiful!! (I quilt all my fabrics for my purses). The straps measure approx. 12" straight up. It is 10 and 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/4 wide and 9 1/2 long.
I also do special orders.

Bronze and Classy Necklace and Earring Set

This is a real pretty set. I used bronze colored seed beads along with antique copper chain, some natural stone, goldstone and swarovski crystals. The necklace is about 26" long. It slips over your neck and hangs real nice but not to long.
The earrings have goldstone and swarovski crystals also and are 2 and 1/2 inches long.

Sea Lion Luv (174)

This adorable necklace features a wooden pendant of two snuggly sea lions. It hangs from a length of turquoise chips and brown lava beads, like volcanic rocks on the seashore. The findings are all sterling, including a toggle clasp. The necklace is 21 inches long.

Swan Deco (142)

This elegant, geometric piece is 16.5 inches of onyx, matte round beads and polished cube beads, and polished cubes of clear quartz, with a black cinnabar swan pendant, sterling findings and toggle clasp.

Lavender and Silver Horn Ring (R003)

This light, curled horn is the perfect accent for any kind of faerie, nymph, or satyr costume.
The claw is made of polymer clay with a light metallic finish, which makes it MUCH lighter than a metal claw. It also won't tarnish. The ring itself is woven by hand out of purple and clear seed beads. Ring size 9.

Bandwidth problems

Sorry everyone. It seems as if I have exceeded my bandwidth with Google Page Creator, which is strange since I am only using 6 MB of the 100MB allotted to me. So, as a result, all my images are no longer being shown. I will work on it and get everything back up as soon as possible.

This necklace is designed to slip right over your head, and has a twist to it, just for fun! If it was laid out the necklace would be about 24 inches long.

Purple and White Woven Earrings

They are a little "tamer" than other dangle earrings I've done in the past - but I think I really like both types :) I hope you enjoy them too!
These earrings are approximately 3 inches long.
