As Yum Yum waits patiently for Spring to arrive, I think that I need to start coming up with a project for the summer. I have been toying with the idea of re-landscaping the strip of lawn that is on the side of our house. I'm thinking of removing the grass and possibly installing a concrete mowing edge along the property line. I would then use a combination of gravel or decorative rocks as ground cover with some plants added into the mix. I was thinking of maybe using Pampas grass.
Anyway, I think I'll try post a few photos of the area and see if any of you might have any suggestions.
It just amazes me the positions she ends up sleeping in. Oh well, enough playing, it's time to get back to work. Spring Break means getting caught up on the assignments the kidlets didn't get done when they should have. So, instead of trying to fix a virus-ridden computer, I get to help them with their assignments and labs.
You know, Yum Yum's idea is looking better and better all the time.
Well, my wife went and did it and now we have to pay the consequences! We have been having a multitude of Goldfinch coming and eating their thistle seed which, by the way, is pretty darn expensive. It had gotten so busy at the feeders, that they were actually eating off of the ground, which Goldfinch usually do not do. So, one her way back from work last Saturday, my wife picked-up another Shepherd's Hook and some thistle socks to add some feeding stations for the Goldfinch.
Well, it didn't take more than two minutes before they swarmed the feeders. Although they are still feeding off of the ground, there are now three more feeding socks to attach themselves to.
Here's a photo taken through our kitchen window. By the time we got the camera, a lot of them had already flown off, but here are the ones that stayed. I know, the screen is a mess and those rips in it are courtesy of Yum Yum...
Not as many birds, but a better view of them...
Finally, a much better view. As you can see, my wife used electrical ties to secure the Shepherd's Hook to the post, which the birds use as perches...
Remembering back when our kids were younger, one of the decisions my wife and had to make, was what type of beds to purchase for them. Since they were sharing a room at the time, we figured that in order to save space, it would be best to invest in bunk beds. However, since we were not the ones that were going to sleep in them, we asked the kids to see what they had to say about it. Well, it sure didn't take long for them to respond in a resounding, "YES!" So, with that decision behind us, we now had to decide what style of bunk beds to purchase.
The first question we asked ourselves is whether we wanted to get a metal bunk bed or a wooden one. Well, although we did like the look of some of the metal ones, for the most part, we thought they looked too "industrial" and not conducive to a our kid's room so, we decided on wood. Now that we knew the material of our bunk beds, we next had to decide on the style. Since our two kiddos would obviously be sharing and one was older than the other, we felt that a twin over full bunk bed would be a good choice. Our youngest would sleep in the top bunk with the twin bed and our oldest would occupy the lower one with the full bed.
Well, this happened many years ago and even though we eventually got them their bunk bed, it wasn't quite what we were looking for. You see, this was before the age of the Internet and our choices were limited mainly to stores located around our city. Now, all you have to do is go online and search for the bunk bed of your choice and you are inundated with choices. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If you are currently searching for a bunk bed, a loft bed, or one with a futon, I have found a place you might want to shop at. By clicking on one of the links, you will be taken to a site where you can view many different styles, shapes, and designs of quality bunk beds.
If you would take a look at the following photo, you will see one of the many styles of bunk beds they offer. This particular bed is made of solid pine and it also includes the slates for the mattress support (yes, this is a big thing) and plenty of storage. If you do not currently have mattresses, you have the option of ordering those as well. Since this bed is made of solid pine and weighs-in at a hefty 269 pounds, you know it's sturdy. There's also another nice surprise included with this bed...Free Shipping! Yes, you saw correctly. -You don't have to worry about shelling-out another few hundred bucks to have the bed shipped to your home: it's included in the price!
I just showed my wife the above photo and she agreed with me: if we could do it all over, we would definitely be getting our bunk bed from here. So, if you're currently in the market for a bunk bed, I hope that you will take a few minutes, wander over, and browse through their collection. I'm sure that you will find what you're looking for AND at a price you can afford.

My oldest had an assignment in her Oceanography class to create her own Tide Pool creature. I think she did a fantastic job and her drawing is terrific!! She gets her talent from her mom :) Here is what she came up with...
Pagurus gruvati
The Pagurus gruvati or Groovy Crab, as it is commonly known, lives mainly in the Middle Tide Zone of tidal pools. Even though it lives in the middle tide zone, it usually ventures out into other areas of the tide pool and onto the land to gather food and to visit. Although it is a cousin of the Hermit crab and does share some of its characteristics, it is indeed a creature set apart.
Description...
The Groovy Crab will grow to an average size of between 8 to 13 cm in length, with the females being slightly smaller. They are born already having a strong shell about their body to protect them. As they mature, the Groovy Crab will molt its shell and then find another to call home, which will occur until the Groovy Crab reaches maturity. As this time approaches, they will find a small cave near the bottom of the tidal pool and remain there until they grow their final shell.

This process can take as long as four weeks and it is during this time that they are the most vulnerable to predators. To help in their defense, they use a special gland located at the base of their throat to secrete a strong acid, which they can shoot into the face of an enemy. So that the acid does not immediately disassociate when it hits the water, it is encased in a protective film, which bursts on impact. This way, the enemy will get the full power of the acid. Once they have grown their adult shell, the gland will no longer produce this acid, but will serve another purpose.
Mobility: The Groovy crab has four legs, which it uses to get around the tidal pool; with two larger claws on the front. These strong claws are used to get food, dig in the sand, general hygiene, and for defense. Yet, these claws also serve a more fanciful function: they can make music. Using their front claws, the Groovy crab can produce some rather complex musical sounds, which it uses for communication and entertainment. This music can be heard up to a mile away under water, and even further, when they are on land.
Extra features: The Groovy crab also has two antennae on the top of its head, which can move in any direction. Strangely, the crab has a light producing organ, which can produce a bioluminescence chemical in all the primary colors. They emit these colors through their antennae, often in conjunction with their music. When there are several Groovy crabs in the area, it can have quite a strobbing effect.
The acid sack that protected them throughout their most vulnerable period of life no longer produces acid, but it does have another function. The Groovy crab is able to squeeze air through the sack and manipulate it in such a way as to produce an audible sound. Scientists studying the Groovy crab state that when activated, they can hear what sounds like the word, "Dude."
Another interesting fact about the Groovy crab, is the fact that not only can they produce bioluminescence chemicals through their antennae, but also through their shell. As they cling to the rocks in the tidal pool, they can change their shell color to match their surroundings, just like a chameleon. However, it has also been observed that they can create many patterns, in varying colors.
Breathing: The Groovy Crab is at home both in and out of the water. While in the water, they breathe through a series of gills, which allows them to extract oxygen from the surrounding water. When they come onto land, they are able to close-off the gills using a watertight membrane and breathe using a pair of lungs.
Eating: They like to eat just about anything they can get their claws on. They travel the bottom of the tidal zone and eat whatever dead fish may be present. As they prefer not to kill living fish, when it comes to "flesh foods," they eat carrion. However, they will eat most any type of plant, although they do seem to prefer rock algae and seaweed. They have also been known to eat the occasional Twinkie left behind by a careless beach goer.
Reproduction: Once they are mature (about 1 year old), the Groovy crabs will meet their mates at the Sand Bar and when the females lay their eggs, the males will then fertilize them. The gestation period for the eggs is approximately one month. During this time, the female will carry the eggs and protect them. Once they are ready, she will deposit them in the water, where the salt in the ocean will dissolve the shell and the Groovy crab is born.
Predators: Until they reach maturity, just about every creature would love to get their fins on the tasty Groovy Crab. However, once they are grown and have their "adult shell," their only natural predator is the Copper fish. These fish run in packs, called squads, and tend to round-up the Groovy fish and eat them.
Life span: The Groovy crab has a life span averaging about 40 years.
Lifestyle...
The Groovy Crabs are social creatures and live in groups called Communes. These communes can have as many as 50 crabs in them. They do everything together as a group and during the day, seem to enjoy just hanging-out on the rocks. When night falls, they gain their second wind and venture to the beach to scrounge for Twinkies and any other tid-bits left over by visiting humans. This is also the time that they seem to "break out of their shells" and have fun.
If you are lucky enough to be on the beach when they arrive, you will be a welcomed guest to one of their concerts and light shows. Beach goers have been known to plan nighttime bon fires near where the Groovy crabs gather. In exchange for some choice morsels of food, the crabs provide the music and light show and the humans and crabs dance the night away.

I know, it's a funny name for a product, but it is very descriptive of what it does. Flushy, Trashy, and Sinky are professional-strength cleaning products that you can use in your own home. Now, even though these products are professional-strength, they are safe to use in your own home. You see, they use plant-based ingredients which are not only Eco-friendly, but also non-toxic and bio-degradable. So, you get the best of both worlds: cleaning products that are both Professional strength AND safe to use! For additional information on these and more of their natural household cleaning products, please visit my friends at Natural House.
A few weeks ago, I received a 30-day supply of Flushy, Trashy, and Sinky to review. When I first received the package, I have to admit that I was somewhat taken back at the small size: I received 4 pouches each of the Flushy and Sinky; along with 4-ounces of Trashy. But, after thinking about it for a moment, I realized that I'm only going to be cleaning the toilet and garbage disposal once each week. So, I will only need four pouches (If you have more than one toilet, like us, you may need to get two (2) packages of Flushy to last a month). As for the Trashy, I found in my first application that a little goes a long way and I have yet to even hit the halfway point on the bottle. Now, let's take a look at each one.
Flushy: As I mentioned, this package contains four (4) water soluble pouches, which you will use to clean your toilet. All you do is take one (1) pouch and drop it into your toilet, wait about 5-10 seconds for it to start foaming, then you take your toilet brush and clean as you normally would.
Flushy will naturally digest odors at their source leaving a fresh botanical scent. I have to admit that I have used many chemicals to clean toilets over the years and this is one of the freshest scents that I have smelled. Flushy will remove stains, hard water rings, and rust streaks leaving the water a clean, aqua blue color. This blue color will disappear after the first flush, but the scent will remain for a while. As for the hard water and rust stains, it did not totally remove them on the first application, but after only two (2) treatments, they are noticeably fainter and I have no doubt that they will disappear totally after a few more uses. Although we are on a city sewer system, Natural House states that Flushy promotes healthy septic tanks and breaks down waste.
After using Flushy for a few weeks, I have to say that I am very pleased with it's performance. It has begun to remove our rust and hard water stains and is keeping our toilet clean and smelling good. After all, a clean toilet is a happy one.
Sinky: This package also contains four (4) foaming pouches. With these, you place one (1) pouch in the drain and run the hot water for approximately 10-15 seconds, where the pouch will dissolve and begin to foam. If you have a garbage disposal, turn it on for a few seconds to help Sinky to clean and deodorize it. Since it was difficult to actually see Sinky in action when I placed it in our disposal, I took a flashlight and observed it in action. Sure enough, a few seconds after the hot water hit, Sinky began to foam. Once I was sure that it was actually working, I turned-on our garbage disposal and let Sinky do its work. These cleaning packets are said to help break down grease and food scraps to help prevent
clogs and slow drains. Used weekly, Sinky will scour your drain and
disposal driving-out odors at their source leaving a fresh, botanical
scent.
Again, once I completed the first treatment, I noticed a fresh scent coming from our disposal, which is much better than what it smelled like before. I half expected the old "garbage disposal" smell to return after a few days, but to my surprise, it didn't. With the second application, I even began to notice a marked improvement on our slow drain. I didn't expect Sinky to be able to completely free-up our drain on the first try, but, as with Flushy, I have noticed an improvement with only the second application.
Trashy: This guy comes in a 4-ounce spray bottle. Although you may not think this would be near enough to last a month, I have to say that a little goes a long way with Trashy. I use it on our cat litter boxes (we have two, because we have picky cats) and on our indoor trash container. Whenever I change the cat box, which is several times a day, I give it a spray of Trashy along the edge and wipe it down with a piece of toilet paper (although you can just let it evaporate on its own within a few minutes) and I immediately get a nice, fresh scent and the cat odor vanishes.Surprisingly, after only a few applications, the regular litter box odor that we usually smelled in the house has vanished. I also use Trashy whenever I change the trash bag. I give the bottom of the trash container one or two sprays and then put in the bag. Again, the odor is gone and the active ingredients keep odors from coming back.
You can use Trashy for any place where odors may be present: Outside garbage cans, diaper pails (I really wish this would have been around when our kids were still in diapers), recycling containers, bathroom containers,
and any "trashy," smelly container you may have.
After using Trashy for the last few weeks, I am very pleased with the results. We no longer have the odors associated with our trash can and the litter boxes. In fact, except for seeing our cats when you come into our house, you would not know we had any.
With that being said, I have used Flushy, Trashy, and Sinky for almost three weeks and in that time, I have to say that I have been
impressed with the products. I know that I will be planning on continuing to use these products. And, since I have been so pleased with Flushy, Trashy, and Sinky, my wife and I are going to be taking a look at trying some of their other products.
To learn even more about these great products, please take a few moments and view this video they made (Hint: Who is the hero of this saga? Answer this question in the appropriate entry and this will count as two (2) entries in the contest)...
You can purchase these products directly from Natural House or you can find Flushy,Trashy, and Sinky at Amazon. As a side-note, they are eligible for Supersaver shipping, so if you're short of the $25 limit to qualify on your order, at only $4.99 each, these products make a great "stocking stuffer" to make-up the difference.

Yes, I was thinking of that famous line from Jaws when I wrote this. But, it's true! You can see, these ducks climbing all over each other trying to get at the food; quaking up a storm and just being, well...ducks.
In the photos, you can see some of the ducks running toward the camera and the other feeders, where there were an additional eight or so ducks gobbling down some food. We get this "duck convention" at least twice a day now, with more coming all the time. Usually it is 20 + ducks at the morning and evening feedings, with a few stragglers flying in throughout the day.
This is in addition to the plethora of other birds and squirrels that filter in throughout the day. Oh, and let's not forget the Starlings, who have just recently re-discovered our yard and remind me of yet another classic movie: The Birds.
