Adding Pinterest Pin Buttons to your Images in Blogger

This is something I just came across today, so I figured I would share this with you. If you are a member of Pinterest, then you know about pinning images from other sites and about using the "Pin It" button on your web browser. But, what about being able to have other people "Pin" images from your site? Well, they can still use the "Pin It" button, but to make it even easier for them, why not place a button right below the image you want them to Pin?

Well, this is what I will try and explain today. First, you will need to login to your Pinterest account and then Click "Pin It Button" under the "about" tab on the upper right of your profile page. Scroll down until you get to the section titles, "Pin It Button for Web Sites." Also, you can just follow the link here to the Pinterest Goodie Page
Here's a screenshot of what you will see. Your URL areas will be blank, I just let you see what I was working on to give you an idea of what it will look like when complete...
Photo of Pinterest dashboard
  • First, go to the actual page that your image appears and copy the url
  • At Pinterest, at the top of the section, you will see, "URL of the page the pin is on:". Paste the url here

  • In your Blogger editor, click on the HTML button and come down to where your image appears. Copy the URL address of that image

Here is what your image/photo URL will look like...

  • At Pinterest, come down to where it says, "URL of the image to be pinned:". Paste the image URL here

  • Provide a description of your photo. This is what will appear in the Pinterest "Pin It" window when it opens
photo of all codes
  • Find, "Add this code to your page, right where you want the button to appear:". While still in HTML mode, copy the code that appears and place it below your photo.
  • You might also want to be sure that you place the code before the closing CENTER tag, so it looks good
Here is what the code will look like when placed under your photo... photo of what code will look like when completed
  • Finally, at the bottom of the section, where you see "Add this code to your page only once, directly above the closing tag:" you will need to copy the javascript and place it in your template just above the tag
If you are unsure, I have included a few photos on how to get to your template. Also, be sure to SAVE your template before making any changes...

After you place the code and save, go back to your Blogger editor and click "Preview" to see that everything looks good.

Disqus or CommentLuv

This is going to be a rather short post, because I need some advice. I have had it with the Blogger commenting system and want to try a more reliable one. Is there anyone out there who uses either Disqus or CommentLuv? What are your thoughts on these systems?

How to Use Jump Breaks in Blogger

Have you ever gone to a site and seen those "Read More-->>>" links? Well, this is going to tell you how to put these in your posts. These jump breaks are very popular in SEO circles as a way of getting your visitors to click-through to an interior page on your site. However, I plan to use them to help speed-up the loading of my main page...

You Comment, I Follow

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing this phrase a lot lately. But what does it mean? Does it mean that if I leave a comment on your blog that somehow you are going to follow me back to my blog? Well, that’s what I thought it meant, until I did some research...

How to Make a Badge for your Blog

I did a lot of research on this several months ago, but never got around to sharing what I discovered. So, I will take this opportunity to reveal the fruits of my labours. I wrote this article, so you can copy the code from my site and then just input the information for your particular site. Once your values are input, you should be good to go.

How to Enable Printer Friendly Pages

As I was going through and reading the blogs I follow, I noticed that one of them had a pretty nifty (I know, dated saying), button on their site; it was a "Print this Page" button. Basically, what this does is when you press the button, only the blog post and the comments will print out. The rest of the site, including the sidebars, header, and the footer are not printed. This allows the reader to print out an article that interests them, without having the entire blog printed...

Tips to Copy Protect your Content

Due to the increase in content piracy, I have decided to do some research and put together some resources which you can use to help prevent this from occurring. The information presented here is for your benefit to use or not, as you desire. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or if you know of any other ideas I may have left out. The resources mentioned will not stop the die-hard pirates, but it should curb the novices and give them pause to think...

What I'm planning on doing is increasing the number of posts that appear on the main page, but I really don't want to increase the loading time of the page. This being said, I plan to add these little breaks to my older posts; thereby, giving more exposure to my posts, while not compromising the load time.

How to Make your Blog Mobile-Friendly

For the past several weeks, I have been working on a new template that will hopefully make my site load faster. As a result, I have also been searching for ways to make my site more user-friendly and the one thing that never even entered my mind before today was: mobile users. With this thought in the back of my mind, I tried to find a place where I could test my site and see what it would look like on a mobile phone. Well, what I found was not very good and to sum up my viewing experience...yuck!

Tips to Help Copy-Protect Your Content

Due to the increase in content piracy, I have decided to do some research and put together some resources which you can use to help prevent this from occurring. The information presented here is for your benefit to use or not, as you desire. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or if you know of any other ideas I may have left out. The resources mentioned will not stop the die-hard pirates, but it should curb the novices and give them pause to think.

As I was prowling around the web, I discovered that the most popular first line of defense is to get your content copy protected. Now, there are two services which stood out to me and they are: Copyscape and My Free Copyright.

  • With Copyscape, you place a badge on your site notifying everyone that your content is protected. You can also input your URL and they will look up the first 10 instances of duplicate content from your site. For a more detailed report, you will need to pay $0.05 per search. There is also the option of signing up for their copysentry program for $4.95 per month. This service will inform you if any duplicate content shows up on the web. copysentry

  • You may also want to put a badge on each of your individual posts.

  • The other service is called MyFreeCopyright.com This service provides an actual copyright of your original content. They provide you with a logo to place on your site. This logo directs your visitor to your copyright registration page, which provides proof of your copyright. You can swing by their site and view the FAQ's, as they can answer any questions you may have. This is also a free service.

  • You can license your work through Creative Commons. You can choose how you wish to share your content and then place a badge on your site which will denote the restrictions, if any, you place on sharing your work.

  • You may wish to choose to place a watermark on your photos and images. Many photo software programs offer this feature, including the one I have started to use: Picasa. Yes, it is free (do you sense a theme here?) and very easy to use.

  • I have tried to find a way to add a watermark to my posts, but it will only work on the original; once copied, the watermark disappears, which kind of defeats the purpose.

  • You can also put a copyright on your feed. If you use Feedburner, you can follow the link for the instructions.

  • If you use Wordpress., they have a plugin available for you.

  • Stepping it up a notch...

  • There is a feature that you MAY want to try and that is disabling the right-click function on your page. This would prevent the casual pirate from copying and pasting your text or images. You can get the code at dynamicdrive.com. You then paste the code in the "body" section of your HTML code. For those that use Blogspot, you will need to go to your Layout page, click "add gadget", click "add HTML/Java", paste the code and hit "save."

  • If you have a Wordpress blog, they already have a plugin for this feature. Click here, for the information and download.

  • If you wish to have everything protected, including your coding, you can investigate HTML Protector.

  • The Pirates Have Attacked...

Okay, it has happened and something needs to be done to protect your property, so what do you do?

  • The first thing you should do is contact the pirate and let them know that you want them to stop. I have included a cease and desist letter that I found at PlagiarismToday.com (or use one of your own), that you can send to them. Just fill in the relevant information on the letter and you are ready to go. Obviously, feel free to copy it off my site. Also, be sure that you have already copyrighted your work or you have proof that it is yours, as some of these thugs could actually turn around and sue you, claiming that the work they stole from you, is actually theirs (I found this out today).

  • If they still refuse to comply, then you can contact their web host, if it is a Blogspot blog, just go to the navigation bar at the top of the page and click the "flag" button and follow the instructions.

  • Contact the search engines and inform them.

  • Here is the Google form for you. They suggest you fax it for faster service.

  • If you really want to sock-it-to-them, contact their advertisers (let's face it, these "people" are in it for the money, so you might as well hit them where they live) and let them know that one of their affiliates has committed plagiarism. Since this is against most company's TOS, they will more than likely pull the plug on them.

I hope that this has been of assistance to you.

You Comment I Follow

photo of a cat drinking from a cup with a picture of a cat on it.I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing this phrase a lot lately. But what does it mean? Does it mean that if I leave a comment on your blog that somehow you are going to follow me back to my blog? Well, that’s what I thought it meant, until I did some research.

What this phrase means, is that the blog owner has turned off the NoFollow command in their blog, thus allowing the Googlebots to follow the comments and thus give a little love to those that take the time to comment on your blog. When the NoFollow command is in place, the Googlebots do not follow your comments, so any links you may leave are are not followed and are useless.

For a more indepth account as to why the NoFollow attribute is in place, I will leave it to someone who knows what they are talking about:

http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050118-204728

After I removed the NoFollow attribute, I posted a comment in my sidebar to let my readers know just what I did (well, you can actually just look off to the right-side as well. I know, it’s late and I’m tired)

  • As a Thank You for those who comment, I have done the following:

  • Comments on this blog are now made DOFOLLOW for the Google Spiders.

  • Comments are moderated.

  • Spam will not be tolerated.

Now, if you are interested in turning your blog into a Dofollow site, the first thing you will need to do is go into your html and click "expand widgets". Next, I suggest that you save your template.
Look through your coding until you come across this...

Where you see the rel='nofollow' just remove that portion and save the changes. Your site is now a Dofollow site.

Your opinion counts

I am trying to add some texture to my template and I would like to have your opinion on which way I should go. I need to know if this texture makes the text more difficult to read. I want the site to be "easy on the eyes." I do not want to create something that will put strain on your eyes. If you could let me know which you prefer: texture or just plain. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter and thank you for you comments.

blog help

As you can tell from my site, I am new to this blogging thing. I know my site is dismal looking, but how can I change the looks if I don't know HTML? I would like to have a picture in my headline banner, but every time I try to put one in, I lose the title. I would also like to have a different layout, but where can I find templates other then those offered by my blog service?

My other problem is, how do I get people to read what I am writing? Is it just a matter of time, or do I need to do more then ping the various engines?

Anyway, if anybody has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. I really enjoy doing this and would like to share my stories with others.

I found this cartoon and just had to share it. Thanks for reading.

Technology Blues

If I could sing, this song would be a hit. I just spent the last 4 hours trying to get my page looking somewhat normal. This is only my 3rd day at this and I realize that there would be a learning curve.....but WOW! Yes, it's alot of trial and error, but I am actually, slowly (insert your adverb of choice here), becoming able to recognize SOME things in the code. I am working on the classic template on purpose, so I am forced to work with Html.
I figure, it's going to be a pain and I could just as easily use the drag and drop of the improved templates, but I want to expose myself to something new and try to exercise my brain- believe me, it needs exercise. Any tips on Html, please let me know.
Thanks
