Tips on Choosing a Lamp

I don’t know about all of you, but ever apartment or house I have ever lived in did not adequate lighting. Yes, every room had the mandatory ceiling lights, but other than that, I was basically stuck. So, I figured it was time to figure out what type of lights I wanted to purchase and what style would best fit my particular dwelling. Now, the style part I cannot help you with, because everyone’s taste and circumstance is different. However, I can try and help you with choosing the correct type of light for the room you wish to brighten.

One of the first things that you will need to think about when choosing lamps for your home, is what type of lighting you wish to have. Do you want to have direct lighting or indirect lighting? For example, when you have direct lighting, you will be shedding your light on a particular object or portion of your room. If you are choosing a lamp for the sole purpose of lighting a task-oriented area of your room, than this is the type of light you would want to purchase. If, however, you wish for general illumination of the room, than I would suggest going for a lamp that offers indirect illumination.

While doing some research for this article, I came across a word that I had never heard of before. It was very intriguing and since it is relevant to this topic, I felt it would be kind of fun to share it with you. The word I am talking about is torchieres. Since the prefix of the word is torch, I felt pretty confidant that it had something to do with lighting, and I was correct. These types of lamps are used for indirect lighting. The bulbs direct its light to a reflecting bowl, which then bounces the light upward and into the room. This washes the light throughout the entire room, instead of directing it towards a specific area. This is the type of light that should be chosen if you are wishing for general illumination of a room.

Although the first lamp that you may purchase might be a floor lamp (ours is located behind our television), you might also decide to look into purchasing table lamps, to not only decorate your tables, but also help in the lighting of your home. Again, the decision on which style to choose is up to you; however, you will once again need to decide what you want to use that table lamp for. If you plan to use the table as a desk or a workstation, you may want to lean towards purchasing a lamp that offers direct lighting. If, however, you plan to use the lamp for general illumination and decoration, than you will probably want to purchase an indirect lighting lamp.

The purchase of portable lighting for your home does not have to be difficult. Once you know what type of lighting you want, it then falls upon you to choose the lamp that will look best in your home or apartment. Lastly, I feel that the best part of having a portable lamp is that it goes with you whenever you move; an investment that stays with you.

Slowing Down for a Few Weeks

photo of koko in a small boxHi, I just wanted to let everyone know that I will probably not be posting as often as I have been. For the next few weeks, I will be extra busy with the homeschooling thing. You see, in addition to trying to get the regular school work completed on time, I am also helping my kids get prepared for the state tests they have to take. They have already taken the math portion, so the only two tests that they need to take are language and reading. Reading is not an issue, but the language portion has me tearing out what's left of my hair. Let's see: gerund phrases, predicate nominatives, and indefinite pronouns as antecedents, to name just a few. Now, what ever happened to the usual nouns and verbs that I grew up learning about. Why do we have to learn about this stuff? Oops, some more hair just came out of my head. You see, just writing about this stuff is making me go bald.

If this were not enough, they are also in the process of writing their middle school project, which happens to be on segregation. To reward their hard work on this project, I told them that I would publish their projects on my site. I was not expecting to see two faces staring back at me in abject fear. I realize that my site is not the best one out there, but I never imagined that just the thought of having something posted on it would bring about such an adverse reaction. There goes some more hair.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that, even thought I won't be posting as often, I'll still be lurking around the Internet and trying not to lose too much more hair. Oh, has anyone heard of a hosting company called Justhost.com?

The Last Thirty Pounds

photo of koko sitting on a boxAs I come within the final 30 pounds of my weight goal, I have noticed that things have started to happen very slowly. My weight has basically stalled at 215 lbs and my fat loss seems to have slowed to a veritable crawl. Now, with regards to the actual pounds lost I am not that concerned, because I am continuing with my strength training routine. I figure that if I gain a pound or two or, if I happen to remain the same weight, I can just chalk it up to building muscle. However, when it comes to not seeing any results in the fat loss department, that is when I start to have concerns.

As I have stated before, when you first begin to lose weight, the fat will first start to disappear from your legs, arms, back, neck, buttocks, and finally your midsection. This is why it is important to take baseline measurements before you begin your diet, because your initial fat loss may not be that noticeable. With that being said, I have noticed that the fat around most of my body, with the noticeable exception of the old tummy, has mainly disappeared. Yes, I have lost a tremendous amount from my midsection, but it seems that these last thirty pounds are fighting like crazy to remain.

I figured that I had lost most of the fat from around my extremities, but over these past few months, I seem to have been mistaken. Just recently, I have noticed that the veins in my arms and legs are beginning to show. I never really paid much attention before, simply because I had never seen them before. But, there they are and this can only mean one thing: my body is still in the process of rendering my entire body of the fat I have so carefully cultivated over many years. It seems like my belly fat, acting like an unwanted guest, seems unwilling to leave.

I have observed, throughout this entire process, that even though we do not lose fat the way we would like (belly first), we do lose it. It is a much more gradual and systematic way and although it seems like it takes forever, try not to lose hope. You will discover that all your hard work and dedication is paying off. You will notice that the fat is disappearing, just not where you would like it. The main point is: I am still losing the fat and I should stop complaining about where it is being taken from.

Heading to the Basement

I have been doing a lot of thinking over the past few weeks and I have decided to not approve any additional paid advertisements. Yes, I know that this is nothing new, as many EC users are doing the same thing, but I really wanted to give the new system a chance. This being the case, my site, which is consistently at the top of the Lifestyle category, will soon be relegated to the EC basement. Why am I doing this? Well, yesterday when I again looked at the stats of outgoing clicks to my advertisers, I noticed that they were, once again, painfully low. I feel that if you use your hard-earned credits to advertise on my site, you should get what your credits' worth. Since my advertising will still only get partial page views on other sites, this will not totally correct the problem of low-clicks, but it should help. I understand that many of the paid advertisements on my site come from Entrecard users and I want to say that, you are always welcome on my site, but from now on, you will need to buy your ad space using EC credits.

A way to help solve this problem would be to implement what many have already been discussing in the forums, and that would be a two-widget system. I realize that this would mean an additional widget on my site, but I feel it would solve the problem on many fronts.

  • It would give the advertisers their own widget to cycle through, meaning they would have one less site to compete with, thus giving them more page views.

  • The EC advertisers would have their customary advertising spot, just as it has always been.

  • For those who do not wish to have any paid ads on their site, they just don't install the widget.

  • For those, like me, who are currently not accepting paid ads, for the reason I have already stated, this would remove that reason and the advertisers would have new sites on which to advertise. More sites equals more page views.

  • For those who would accept paid advertising on their site, that widget would need to conform to the current One-Scroll policy, while the traditional EC widget could be placed wherever the site owner wanted.

  • With these measures in place, I feel that Entrcard would be able to solve a variety of it's current problems and also increase its advertiser base.

If this is ever implemented, I will be more than happy to accept paid advertising on my site. So, for now, I will let the paid advertisements run their course and I will let you know when my site is 100% EC credit advertising.

Tips on Buying Your First Infant Car Seat

Congratulations, you’re having a baby! I know from experience that having a baby can be an exciting and hectic time. There are many decisions to be made and you want to make sure that you make the right choices. From choosing your doctor to picking the colors for your baby’s room, you can quickly become overwhelmed with the decisions that you need to make. Well, even though I cannot help you pick out the best color for you baby’s room, I can help you cross one item off your massive to-do list: I can help you pick out your new car seat.

As you will no doubt notice, there are many different styles and varieties of car seats; however, they will all do the same thing: protect your new baby. Since this is your first time purchasing a car seat, I would suggest you visit a car seat buying guide, to help you make an informed decision. This guide will take you through the variety of styles and features that are available and help you to narrow-down your choice. It will also explain some of the features you may want have in your car seat. For example, you may want the added protection of purchasing a seat with a 5-point safety harness, which not only secures the shoulder, but the legs as well. Another feature you should look for is a seat with a removable cover. Believe me, you will need to wash the cover often, and if it can be removed without having to take out the entire seat, all the better.

Once you have looked through the buying guide and have decided on the features you want in the seat, it is time to decide which style you wish to purchase. If you are purchasing a rear seat, you will eventually need to up-grade to a forward-facing seat. With forward-facing seats running anywhere from $85 and up, you may be able to save yourself a little money by purchasing a convertible car seat. These seats can be used as a rear-facing seat and then, when your child is 20 pounds and one year old, can be converted to a forward-facing seat. Naturally, these seats tend to be more expensive than the basic rear seat, but you do get the added benefit of not having to purchase yet another seat, a year down the line.

Another style you may wish to consider, happens to be the type my wife and I used when our first child was born. If you have a very active lifestyle and plan on doing a great deal of traveling and to help alleviate the hassle of buckling and unbuckling your baby each time you get in or out of your car. you might want to consider getting an infant car seat carrier. With this style of seat, you install the base in your car and the seat itself locks into the base. When you need to take your baby out of the car, you simply unlock the seat from the base and carry your pride and joy with you. There will be no need to unharness them each time, because the seat travels with you. With this style of seat, there is also the option of purchasing a stroller which accommodates the seat. If you are purchasing a rear car seat, be sure and see if the model you are interested in supports this feature. You can get the seat and stroller separately or together. Purchased separately, they make a very affordable baby shower gift.

I hope that this has been of some help for you. My goal is to try and break down the various styles and models to a more manageable number. We now have three types of car seats to choose from: the rear-facing, the convertible, and the car seat carrier. Now for the million dollar question: how do I correctly install it? Well, if you are comfortable doing it yourself, I would follow the manufacturer’s instructions. However, if you are in any way unsure, you may want to contact your hospital or local fire department. Usually, they will be more than happy to show you how to install the seat; some may even do it for you.

If you have any questions, concerns, or if you would like clarification on something, please feel free to leave a comment and I will do my best to help you.

Finding Total Gym Replacement Parts

If you have been searching the Internet trying to find replacement parts for your Total Gym, then search no more. You can get your replacement parts at Huck Products. They have a full line of parts that will get your Total Gym up and running again. I have used them in the past, when I needed to replace a cable and I was very impressed with their service and their products.

In the market for a Total Gym?

Now, if you just want to work your upper body, then here is something that I have been using for the past several months. It's called the Iron Gym

It fits in your doorway and you use if to do pull-ups and chin-ups (you can also get a great ab workout using it). Just be sure to measure your doorway, to make sure that it will fit. As I said, I have been using it for several months, along with the Total Gym, and the results have been fantastic.

Why am I providing this information? Well, even though I am not an affiliate of Huck Products and this is not a PPP, I have received a fair portion of searches for people wanting information on Total Gym replacement parts. Even though the page they were directed to on my site had that information, most did not spend the time to scroll down the page and find the link. So, since I know how frustrating it can be to try and find something on the Internet, I decided to help out and provide the information at the very top of the page. I know, not a very smart thing to do if one is concerned with bounce rates, but I wanted to provide a service for those who visit me.

I know from personal experience how difficult it was finding a reputable company that supports the older Total Gym models. So, if someone searches and happens to stumble upon my site, they can just follow the link and find what they want. I feel strongly that my site should be, first and foremost, about helping people and even though I get no compensation from this, I can have the satisfaction that I was able to help.

Phishing Scam Alert

I am going to assume that since this has happened to me, it may happen to some of you...

I was going through my email last night, when I came across a very authentic-looking email from PayPal. It stated that on 3 January 2009, an unauthorized account accessed my information and, as a security measure, access to some of my more sensitive account information would be denied. The message then informed me that in order to unlock these security measures, I would need to click on the link provided and re-enter my account information.

Naturally, I was concerned, so I opened a new tab and logged into my account
directly through the official PayPal site. When I arrived on my dashboard, there was no mention of any security breach. I then clicked on the History Tab and checked my entire History. Everything was as it should be.

Thinking something may be a little "phishy", I located the Security Tab on the Left Sidebar and clicked it. I then Located a tab for Reporting Phishing Scams and clicked that. I followed the instructions, which stated that I was to forward the email to them and then delete it. Later today, this is the reply I received from PayPal:

Thanks for forwarding that suspicious-looking email.
You're right - it was a phishing attempt, and we're working on stopping the fraud. By reporting the problem, you've made a difference!

Identity thieves try to trick you into revealing your password
or other personal information through phishing emails
and fake websites. To learn more about online safety,
click "Security Center" on any PayPal webpage.

Every email counts. When you forward
suspicious-looking emails to spoof@paypal.com,
you help keep yourself and others safe from identity
theft.

Your account security is very important to us, so we
appreciate your extra effort.

Thanks,

PayPal

I know you are already aware of this, but I feel that I should reiterate it anyway: whenever you receive an email such as the one described above, NEVER follow the link provided. Always open a new tab and go DIRECTLY to the official company website. If everything looks normal, then contact the company directly and let them know about the email you received. More than likely, they will have links that you can follow to report the suspicious email.

I realize that many of you out there use PayPal, so please pass this warning along. For Esty Shop Owners, please pass this warning along in your forums.
Thank you

Keeping Your Computer Clean and Mean

After a long day of working on the computer and doing my Entrecard drops, I prepare to shut down the computer for a well-deserved rest. However, there is one more chore for it to perform and that is it’s nightly cleaning. I open the utility, it scans all the files and browsers, and it finds the usual 52+ MB’s of junk. This is just from one day of use. Can you imagine what it would be like after a month? These files take up valuable memory in your computer, not mention slowing it down.

To help combat this, back in 2004, I stumbled upon a utility program that seems to work wonders. It not only cleans-up and deletes unwanted files from the hard drive and registry, but it can also defragment them. I have to admit, after the first time I used this software, I saw a tremendous difference in speed. After all, it had cleaned-out almost 3 GB of junk so, obviously the computer is going to run better. I just love the way I have to state the obvious. Back to the point, the one thing I would double check before you clean your computer is, unless you want to clear-out all your restore points, make sure that the Restore Point box is unchecked.

Another great feature to look at, especially if you lease your computer and need to return it, is the ability to securely delete files. The following is taken directly from TuneUp Utilities:

TuneUp Shredder uses a method developed by the US Department of Defense to ensure that files and folders are permanently removed from your hard disk, so that your sensitive data can no longer be recovered, even with the use of special software.

Besides cleaning unnecessary files from your computer, TuneUp Utilities allows you to do a few other things you might be interested in…

    • manage running processes

    • edit your registry

    • rescue center, in case you make a mistake

    • display system configuration and performance

    • change window and program settings

    • adjust system appearance

    • customize your startup applications

In 2008, they began to allow you to use the program on up to three computers. So, if you are a multi-computer household, you no longer have to purchase the program for each separate computer, which can be a huge savings. So, if you are interested in keeping your computer a lean and mean computing machine, then why not take TuneUp Utilities for a free, 30-day test drive. Do what I did and see if you like it, before purchasing it.

How to Find the Right Exercise Equipment

Picture of a cat giving a massage to another cat Okay, you have decided to take the plunge and stick with this exercise thing, but you want to buy exercise equipment that will last past the 90 guarantee. We have all been there: you’re rocking-out to your tunes and pedaling away on your stationary bike, only to see yourself flying over the top of the bike and landing on the floor with a handle in your hand. What happened? Well, it was day 91 and the screw worked itself out from the handle. Your $99.00 Stationary Bike just became a weight lifting machine for the garbage men. Don’t worry, there is a way to avoid this scene. Not all exercise machines are built the same. Once you find out HOW you want to use the equipment, it will make it easier for you to choose the right one.

Probably the first question we all have is: why do they build machines that will fall apart so fast in the first place? It is very simple: Economics. They know that a majority of the people who go out and buy exercise equipment are not going to be using it after about six weeks. By this time the newness will have worn off and more likely than not, the machine will end up spending its remaining days as a clothes hanger. They count on the fact that most people will grow tired and bored with the whole routine. They know that the consumer has already seen a significant weight loss (close to 10 pounds, most of it water with 2-4 pounds in fat), and now that their body has adjusted to the routine, the weight will come off a little slower. Discouraged, the consumer will just quit and go on to the next item on their To-Do list.

To avoid these machines you will need to do two things: Research and Research. Yes, I said it twice because it is the most important thing you can do. If you are going to spend several hundred dollars on a QUALITY exercise machine, you need to know that it will be the right machine for you. Ask yourself some questions: What do I want to do with it? Do you want a treadmill, an elliptical Bike, a stationary Bike, a Weight machine, or a combination of several? Find out what type of workout you want to do. This is the first step.

Secondly, after you have decided on the machine or machines you want, go to places like Amazon and read the customer reviews on the equipment. This is a very important step, because these people are actually USING the product you want to buy. Learn from their experiences. Don’t get focused on just one name brand. Look at them all. Chances are the best one will come out on top.

Thirdly, after you have read customer reviews, checkout what the experts say about them. They will have the technical insight, which you will find very informative. They will give you information regarding the stability, construction, and comfort of the equipment. Look for items such as steel vs. aluminum construction. If you are searching for a treadmill, make sure that the motor is powerful enough for your intended use. A good 3.0 CHP (Continuous Horse Power, yes there is a difference) motor is a good baseline. Make sure that the deck is wide enough and long enough for you to have a comfortable stride (a good base line here is 20 inches wide by 55 inches long).

After you have read all the reviews from both consumers and experts, you should have a pretty good idea as to which piece of exercise equipment you want to purchase; However, there is one more step you should take: go to a store which sells the model you wish to purchase or a gym and try it out (again, if it is a treadmill, something else you might want to do is ask the Cardiologists in your area which type they use for stress tests). Take a look at it and actually try it out. If you like what you see and feel, then you are ready to make your purchase.

Again, we are back at the internet. Now that you know the make and model, search for the most inexpensive price. As you search, be sure to make note of the warranty information. Make sure that it is the same one from the manufacturer Also, check for shipping costs. Some companies will include the shipping cost in the price of the machine. Check those that offer it separately and compare the two. Sometimes you may be getting free shipping, but paying more in the end. I hope that this has given you a few ideas as to where to start your search for quality exercise equipment. If you have additional questions, let me know and I will be more than happy to help you in your quest.

Now, if you just want to work your upper body, then here is something that I have been using for the past several months. It's called the

As you might be able to tell from the photo, it fits in your doorway and you use if to do pull-ups and chin-ups (you can also get a great ab workout using it). Just be sure to measure your doorway, to make sure that it will fit. As I said, I have been using it for several months, along with the Total Gym, and the results have been fantastic.

My Weight Loss Reward

One of the great things about losing weight is the fact that your clothes begin to become too large. I’ve noticed that over the past year, a lot of my clothes no longer seem to fit me. The big sweatshirts that I constantly wear around the house have gone from barely fitting me, to something akin to wearing a tent. I love this feeling and thoroughly enjoy going into my closet and grabbing clothes that I used to be too small for me, but now fit like a glove.

The one part of this fantastic adventure that never even occurred to me was the fact that, even though my clothes have become too big for me, my underwear have also outgrown their usefulness. I bet you didn’t see that one coming, did you? If you sit down and think about it, you have to admit that it is not the first thing that comes to mind when bragging to your friends about your weight loss. Yes, you can brag about the new shirts you have bought or that great new pair of pants that you can finally fit into, but when it comes to the "underwear" topic, mums the word.

As I sit and write this, I am trying to decide whether to splurge and purchase a pair that sports a designer label or should I just continue to purchase the usual store brand. I have to admit that as I was surfing the Internet (yes, I have way too much time on my hands, sometimes), I came across a pair of diesel underwear, (I know, it sounds like underwear for truckers, but it is actually a very famous brand name) that not only looked great, but the company offers free shipping, as well. Now, you are probably wondering why I’m making such a big deal about all this and, to be honest, you are correct. It comes down to a simple matter of economics: buy five pairs of store brand underwear or buy one pair of a designer brand. The answer seems simple, but the reasoning behind the decision is a bit more convoluted.

As I draw near to my weight loss goal of 180 pounds, I have been trying to think of something to reward myself. After all, it has been almost two years since I began my diet and exercise routine and I am nearing a weight I have not seen in over twenty years. It seems that there should be something I could do to reward myself for all of my hard work. I have already planned to purchase and consume a Chicago Connection pizza when I reach 200 pounds. Yes, I know it doesn’t make much sense to eat a pizza to celebrate losing weight, but I have not had one of their pizzas, or any pizzas for that matter, in over 16 months. This being said, I feel it is my duty to stimulate the economy and do my part to provide jobs for those workers at the pizza place.

However, once I do reach my target weight, stuffing my face as a reward all the time, will put me right back to where I started and I really don’t want to go there again. Therefore, I think that I might reward myself in a more tangible fashion by splurging on a set of new underwear that not only looks good, but also will serve as a reminder of how far I have actually come. Certainly there are other ways to reward myself, but for now, this seems the most economical and fat-free way of doing so.

Planning Your Alaskan Vacation

With summer fast approaching, our thoughts naturally begin to turn toward planning the annual summer vacation. As road maps and travel brochures begin to appear on kitchen tables around the country, you begin looking for the destination, which will provide you with an experience you will be talking about the rest of the year. I understand that this might be a tall order to fill, but there is a place that offers something for just about everyone.

Instead of going to that theme park or heading to the usual camping ground, why not go somewhere that will astound you with its stunning vistas and crisp, clear air. Why not Travel Alaska and experience, first hand, nature at its most regal. Alaskan vacations are not just about hunting and fishing; there is something to do for just about everyone. Whether you enjoy rafting, hiking, or just giving your camera a workout, you will be able to find something that interests you. One thing that I would like to try, would be taking a rafting tour down the Nenana River. Now, since I have never been rafting before, I would probably elect to take the mild-water rafting tour. Although, if you are of a more daring nature, there are white water rafting options available, as well.

If river rafting is not your cup of tea, you can always take a bus tour through Denali Park. This all day tour will take you through the 95 mile restricted-access Denali Park Road, where your tour guide will help you find the various wildlife that lives in the park. From bears to moose to caribou, you will be able to see Alaska in all its glory and capture it on you digital camera, so you can relive your experience for years to come. If strictly seeing the wildlife is something you would rather relegate to the Discovery Channel, then you can take a leisurely train ride and be amazed by the glaciers of Prince William Sound or, for an up-close and personal feel, you can opt for a cruise, instead. You might be saying to yourself, "I really don’t want to have to pick and choose why can’t I just do all three?" Well, you can. There are a number of different packages to choose from so, be assured, you will get the most from your Alaskan vacation.

As I just mentioned, there are a variety of packages from which to choose. When you sit down to discuss your Alaska Travel plans, keep in mind the photo of sun rising over the lakeactivities you like to do. If you are the type of person who loves backpacking and hiking, you might want to choose one of the back country excursions. Here, you spend several nights at the Backcountry lodge. While there, you can enjoy hiking, biking, panning for gold, or just plain relaxing by the lake. If you prefer to just observe, than you have the option of seeing Alaska by helicopter, plane, train, or bus. Don’t see a package that includes what you want? Why waste your time and money doing something that doesn’t interest you, when you can design your own vacation from a wide variety of choices and pick out the things that interest you. There are many ways to see the wonders of Alaska; the only restriction is your imagination.
